How do you use ChatGPT to learn a new language?

By Eric Snyder, founderUpdated Oct 31, 2026

You can use ChatGPT to learn a new language with the same prompts that work for any topic: plain explanations, the 80/20 version, and a lot of quizzing. Let's say you want enough Spanish to talk to homeowners or your crew. I'd tell it that first, because Anthropic's prompting guide says to add the context or reason behind an instruction so the answer fits what you actually need. Then I'd ask for the 80/20: the twenty phrases I'd use most on a job, and the grammar I can skip for now. And when a rule doesn't make sense, I'd ask it to explain that rule like I'm five.

Then it's practice, and that's the part you can't skip. Have it quiz you one question at a time, mixing in some you have to answer by typing a full sentence, and keep a score. ChatGPT's study mode does that quizzing on its own if you turn it on in a regular chat. It can make mistakes, so for anything that really matters, like a contract, I'd still have someone fluent check it. The prompts are in my guide to six ChatGPT learning prompts.
