Questionthe short answer

Is there an AI video editor free to use?

By Eric Snyder, founderUpdated Oct 31, 2026

Yes, there's an AI video editor that's free to run: Tesseract from Mirage. Its engine previews and renders on your own computer, it's free, and you don't need a Mirage account, according to Mirage's Tesseract page. What isn't free is the brain. You drive it through an AI app like ChatGPT, and that subscription is a separate cost. OpenAI's plan table lists plugins in the ChatGPT desktop app on Plus, which is $20 a month, and the plans above it.

So what do you get for free? It cuts your footage, adds animated titles and motion graphics, mixes sound and keeps everything as an editable project, so a fix changes one thing instead of remaking the whole video. It runs on a Mac, a 64-bit Windows 10 or later PC, or Linux. What it won't do is shoot anything for you. It edits footage you already have, it doesn't generate clips or avatars, and the engine doesn't transcribe, so word-for-word captions need the words from you. If your crew already shoots job clips on their phones, that's the stuff I'd start with. Here's my free AI video editor setup in ChatGPT, step by step.
