What is an AI voice cloning scam?

By Eric Snyder, founderUpdated Oct 31, 2026

An AI voice cloning scam is when somebody uses AI to copy a person's voice, then calls their family pretending to be them in a crisis and asks for money right now. The FTC says all a scammer needs is a short clip of your loved one talking, which can come from something they posted online, and a voice cloning program. The FBI warns they use clips like that to play a close relative in trouble and ask for immediate help or a ransom.

I know how real it sounds, because the voice in my videos is AI. So you can't go by the voice, and the FTC says exactly that: don't trust the voice, hang up, and call the person back on a number you know is theirs. What I'd do is set up a family safe word, so anyone calling for money in a hurry has to say it, and if they can't, you hang up and call your kid on the number you saved. It won't stop every scam out there, but it kills this one. My step-by-step guide to stopping an AI voice clone call covers the word, the call-back and a practice run.
